Jons Kapel

Jons Kapel is a rock cave – a so-called “dry oven” – located at the foot of the freestanding cliff known as Jons Kirkja on the north-west coast of Bornholm. The cave was formed as a sea cave through wave erosion during a period when the sea stood higher against the cliff than it does today. Its name comes from the legend of Jon, a hermit or monk who, according to the story, lived in the cave and preached to the people of Bornholm. At first he preached inside the cave, but later moved to the natural rock ledge above it, known as the Preaching Chair (“Prædikestolen”). Access to Jons Kapel is via a long staircase that follows a cleft down the steep coastal slope to the shore.

Hvidkleven is the light-coloured, steep rock face just north of Jons Kapel and a striking part of the coastal landscape in this area. The pale granite rises dramatically above the sea and can be viewed both from the coastal path above and from the beach at Jons Kapel. Hvidkleven is part of the rugged cliff scenery that makes the area popular with hikers and visitors who want to experience Bornholm’s characteristic coastal rocks up close.
