– experience a historic mill with working machinery

Aarsdale Mølle was built in 1877 and still stands as a striking landmark on the outskirts of Aarsdale. The white, octagonal mill is a so-called Dutch mill – a type in which the main body remains stationary while the cap and sails are turned to face the wind. It is also a smock-style ground mill and stands on a high granite base.

The most fascinating part is inside. The old milling machinery has been preserved, including millstones, sieves, roller mills, belt drives, cogwheels and lifting gear. When the mill is running, you can see how the movement of the wind is transferred through the large mechanical system and into the machinery. It gives a completely different understanding of the technology than simply viewing the mill from the outside. The equipment has been preserved in working condition, and the mill can still be powered by wind.

Aarsdale Mølle also tells the story of the transition from traditional wind power to more modern milling technology. Over time, engines and newer equipment were added, while the original structure and much of the machinery were preserved. Commercial flour production ended in 1986, but the mill remains an unusually complete piece of Bornholm’s industrial and cultural history.

A visit does not have to be only about technology and history. Next to the mill you will find a welcoming café and shop, where the old buildings and historic setting create a pleasant atmosphere. The shop also features arts and crafts by local artists.

Aarsdale Mølle is therefore much more than a landmark on the road between Svaneke and Nexø. Step inside, see the cogwheels and machinery up close – and if the wind is blowing and the mill is running, the history suddenly comes vividly to life.
