The Bison Forest is an approximately 200-hectare enclosed area in Almindingen where a herd of European bison lives. The animals were introduced in 2012 and contribute to greater biodiversity by creating clearings and disturbance in the forest, allowing more plant and animal species to thrive. In 2023, there are around ten bison in the area.
It is possible to experience the bison on foot, but visitors should allow plenty of time and follow the Danish Nature Agency’s recommended distance guidelines (at least 100 metres), as the animals can be difficult to find and sightings are not guaranteed.
The bison are not considered more dangerous than domestic cattle, but visitors should still show respect and caution, especially when there are newborn calves. Around 100,000 people visit the Bison Forest each year to experience the area.
