– live glassmaking at Gudhjem Harbour
Gudhjem Glasrøgeri is located by the harbour in Gudhjem, close to the Baltic Sea and right in the middle of the town’s distinctive atmosphere. Here, you can watch the glassblowers at work and see how hot glass is shaped into finished pieces.
The glassworks was founded in 1978 and is today Bornholm’s oldest glassblowing workshop. It is run by Pernille Bastrup, who has been connected to the workshop since childhood. She later trained at Orrefors Glass School in Sweden and returned to Gudhjem, where she began working with glassblowing and design in 1981. In 1993, she bought the workshop and shop.
Today, Pernille works together with a small team of glassblowers and other staff. Craftsmanship remains at the heart of the business, with a focus on creating glass that is meant to be used – both for everyday life and special occasions – rather than simply displayed.
The shop offers a wide range of handmade glass, and because the pieces are produced in the workshop, visitors also get an insight into the work and techniques behind them.
A visit to Gudhjem GlasRøgeri is therefore both a chance to experience a living craft up close and to take home a piece of Bornholm glass art.
