– Bornholm’s northernmost point
Hammerodde Lighthouse stands at the very northern tip of Hammerknuden – the northernmost point on Bornholm. The small whitewashed lighthouse sits close to the sea in the open landscape and makes a natural destination for a walk in the area.
The lighthouse was built in 1895 as a supplement to Hammeren Lighthouse. Because the much higher Hammeren Lighthouse could be difficult to see from the sea in fog and low cloud, Hammerodde Lighthouse was placed much closer to sea level. The tower itself is 12 metres high, and the lighthouse is still in operation.
From the car park by Sandvig Beach, it is only a short walk along good paths to the lighthouse. The route can easily be extended around Hammerknuden. Continue, for example, along the coast to the ruins of Salomon’s Chapel or further on towards Hammeren Lighthouse. There are plenty of options for both shorter and longer walks through the beautiful landscape.
Near the lighthouse, an old cannon still stands beside the remains of a coastal redoubt. It is a reminder of Bornholm’s former coastal defences, when a series of defensive positions were intended to protect the island against enemy landings. The redoubt at Hammerodde is one of the few where a cannon still remains in place.
