Hammeren

The area around Hammershus and Hammeren – also known as Hammerknuden – is perhaps the most well-known place on Bornholm. Each year, several hundred thousand visitors come to experience Northern Europe’s largest medieval ruin and the beautiful, dramatic landscape that characterises the entire area.

The area offers a wide range of interesting points of interest and nature experiences, providing opportunities for many different walks and repeat visits. It continues to fascinate and never feels the same, as the changing seasons bring very different experiences.

The ruins of Hammershus Castle are Bornholm’s most visited attraction, welcoming around 400,000 visitors annually. Adjacent to the castle is a modern and architecturally striking visitor centre, which offers an engaging and immersive introduction to the castle’s history. A visit to the centre is highly recommended to enhance the experience when exploring the ruins.

Hammerknuden is a rocky headland of approximately 182 hectares, inviting visitors to enjoy wonderful walks along well-maintained paths. The terrain is steep and rugged and may be challenging for those with limited mobility. Hammeren is home to several interesting points of interest – see them via the menu at the top of the page.

Between Hammershus and Hammeren lies Hammer Harbour, which was constructed in 1891 and previously served as the landing place for Hammershus. Today, Hammer Harbour is a popular excursion spot with a kiosk and café, and during the summer season boat trips along the coast are available, offering, among other sights, the sea cave Våde Ovn.
