Hestestenene (The Horse Stones)

Hestestenene consists of three standing stones located along the coastal path west of Gudhjem. The stones are best known from an old local legend that tells of a young, loving couple who lost their lives here. According to the story, the couple travelled in dense fog along the cliff edge when their horse-drawn carriage lost its footing and plunged over the side. Both the couple and the horses died, and the legend says that the horses were turned to stone, left standing and facing the sea as if still searching for their driver.

The standing stones are situated right beside the coastal path west of Gudhjem, in hilly terrain with rocky formations and views of the sea. They lie close to the route and are easy to spot, making them a natural stopping point for walkers following the path towards Salene and Rø.
