Nordbornholms Røgeri stands right beside the cliffs and the Baltic Sea in the southern part of Allinge. Its distinctive chimney, the small beach of Kæmpestranden and the open sea view come together to create one of Bornholm’s most atmospheric settings for a meal.
The smokehouse dates back to 1898, when production was mainly focused on smoked herring for Copenhagen. Since then, the business has expanded to include both a fish shop and a restaurant, while maintaining its connection to Bornholm’s smokehouse traditions. Today, it is run by Camilla Grønning and Sandra Kirketerp Jensen, who took over the business from their fathers and are carrying its story forward into a new generation.
The restaurant is particularly well known for Bornholm’s largest fish buffet, which attracts many guests every year. The buffet offers an extensive selection of fresh fish, smoked specialities, shellfish, herring, salads and other Bornholm favourites. Most of the fish comes directly from the smokehouse’s own production, creating a close connection between the work behind the scenes and the dishes served on the buffet. À la carte dishes are also available, including fish fillet, hot-smoked salmon and the smokehouse’s own interpretation of a traditional stjerneskud.
A large rock rises through the floor in the middle of the restaurant, emphasising how closely the building is connected to North Bornholm’s rocky coastline. From the restaurant and outdoor seating areas, there are views of the cliffs, Kæmpestranden and the Baltic Sea. The atmosphere is relaxed and lively, with room for families, couples and larger groups, while children can explore the natural surroundings around the smokehouse.
The fish shop offers fresh fish, smoked products, several varieties of herring, salads and Bornholm food specialities to take home. Takeaway and fish tapas are also available and can be enjoyed on the beach, on the rocks or elsewhere along the coast.
The combination of the large fish buffet, the smokehouse’s own specialities and its exceptional position between cliffs and sea makes Nordbornholms Røgeri much more than a place to eat. It is a lively meeting place where Bornholm’s food culture and the North Bornholm coast come together.
