The Rocking Stone (Rokkestenen) in Almindingen

The Rocking Stone in Almindingen lies among the trees in the western part of Almindingen and is one of Bornholm’s remarkable rocking stones. The large granite boulder is around 3.8 metres long, 1.6 metres high and weighs about 16 tonnes – yet it can still be set in motion if you find exactly the right place to push. After having become firmly stuck for a period, the stone was repositioned in 2019 so that it could rock again.

The stone is made of local Alminding granite and was moved into place by the ice sheet, though probably not over a very great distance. Folklore, however, offered a much more imaginative explanation: the Rocking Stone was said to rest on a huge diamond that allowed the enormous boulder to move. The search for the diamond became so enthusiastic that the stone was protected as early as 1821 to prevent people from trying to overturn it. Another old legend claims that the stone originally came from Sweden and was thrown towards Åkirke.

The Rocking Stone can be reached along paths through Almindingen, and the walk is easy to combine with other experiences in the area. But once you are standing in front of the stone, there is really only one thing to do: put your hands against it and see if you can make 16 tonnes of granite move.
