Rytterknægten is the highest natural point on Bornholm and is located in the middle of Almindingen. The summit reaches 162 metres above sea level and has been a prominent landmark in the island’s landscape since the 19th century.
At the top stands the viewing tower Kongemindet, built in 1856 to commemorate the visit of King Frederick VII and Countess Danner to Bornholm in 1851. The tower was raised in 1899 with an iron structure to compensate for the increasing height of the surrounding forest, ensuring that visitors could continue to enjoy the view. With this extension, the structure now rises well above the treetops.
Kongemindet is open to visitors, who can climb the internal staircase to experience a panoramic view over the forests of Almindingen and large parts of Bornholm. On clear days, it is possible to see all the way to the coasts, and the tower remains one of the island’s most popular viewpoints.
