Svartingedalen

Svartingedalen is a lush and nature-rich rift valley on Bornholm, located east of Hasle in the middle of the open agricultural landscape. The valley is one of around 70 rift valleys on the island and is considered one of the most varied and species-rich natural areas on Bornholm.

The area covers approximately 27 hectares and is today a nature reserve owned by Fugleværnsfonden, which since 2017 has worked to preserve and develop the natural environment in the valley.

Nature and landscape

Svartingedalen is a classic Bornholm rift valley with steep rocky slopes and a narrow valley floor, where nature is allowed to develop relatively undisturbed. The forest mainly consists of deciduous trees – several up to 300 years old – as well as deadwood and fallen trees, creating good conditions for birds, insects and plants.

A winding stream runs through the valley, and the landscape alternates between dense forest and more open areas with meadows, wetlands and grazing land. This variation creates a high level of biodiversity and makes the area attractive for birdlife and nature experiences.

Experiences in the valley

As you move down into Svartingedalen, you quickly notice the contrast between the open landscape above and the almost “hidden” valley with high rock walls and dense vegetation.

One of the valley’s most well-known natural features is Jættebolden – a large glacial boulder which, according to legend, was thrown by a giant.

The area is also known for its शांत, almost untouched atmosphere, where the stream, birdsong and dense forest vegetation create a special sense of nature’s dynamics.

Hiking

There are marked trails through the valley, and it is possible to walk the entire route from north to south. A typical hike is around 3 km each way and takes 1.5–2 hours. The terrain is varied with some steep sections and can be wet and muddy, especially during wetter periods.

Access to the valley is available from both the north and south, typically via Kirkedalsvej near Åhalsegård or from Simblegårdsvej near Hasle.

A hidden natural gem

Svartingedalen is often described as one of Bornholm’s “hidden” natural gems, as it lies discreetly in the landscape and does not attract the same attention as the island’s most well-known natural areas.
