At the DBJ Museum in Nexø, visitors can explore the history of the railways that connected Bornholm’s towns and countryside from 1900 to 1968. The museum is arranged as a historic railway setting with a locomotive, carriages, photographs and objects from the period when both passengers and goods were transported by train across the island.
The exhibition includes the Nexø line’s postal carriage, the special ministerial carriage, which visitors can sit inside, and a goods wagon used for luggage and general freight. Together with the museum’s signs, photographs and other railway equipment, the carriages provide a vivid insight into life around Bornholm’s stations and journeys aboard the island’s narrow-gauge trains.
The first railway opened between Rønne and Nexø in 1900. It was later followed by the routes between Rønne and Allinge and between Almindingen and Gudhjem. In 1935, the three railway companies were united under the name De Bornholmske Jernbaner. The final route, the railway between Rønne and Nexø, closed on 28 September 1968.
The museum is run by the De Bornholmske Jernbaner association, whose volunteers work to preserve and share this distinctive part of Bornholm’s history.
