The south coast
The South Coast is one of Bornholm’s most visited holiday areas and is characterised by open stretches of coastline, long sandy beaches and towns located close to the sea. The landscape is low and bright, with dunes, coastal meadows and wide horizons, and the area has long been a popular destination for summer visitors.
Beaches play a central role along the South Coast. Balka and Dueodde are among Bornholm’s best-known bathing beaches, offering fine sand, plenty of space and conditions well suited to both swimming and spending time by the water. Dueodde is particularly known for its long sandy beach, extensive dune landscape and the tall lighthouse, which is open to visitors.
Nexø is the largest town in the area and serves as a natural focal point. The town features a large harbour, urban life, museums and cultural institutions, and hosts markets and cultural events that contribute to the town’s activity throughout the year.
Along the coast lie Snogebæk, Balka, Sømarken and Boderne, which together give the South Coast its distinct summer character. Snogebæk is known for its harbour area, smokehouse and places to eat, while Balka and Sømarken are primarily associated with beach life and holiday accommodation close to the water.
The area is well connected by paths and small, pleasant roads, making it easy to explore the South Coast on foot or by bicycle. Beach, town and nature lie close together, and many outings can be enjoyed without long distances.
