Nexø

Nexø is a harbour town and the second-largest town on Bornholm, and it serves as a lively summer destination with many visitors. The town has a long and dramatic history marked by both ups and downs – something that may have helped shape a proud, action-oriented and creative population. New development projects are constantly underway, driven by the town’s active business community, associations, prominent figures and creative residents. Nexø is continually evolving and consistently manages to surprise.

Nexø is centrally located between the beautiful natural area of Nørremark, with its archipelago-like coastline, and the coastal stretch featuring some of Bornholm’s – and Europe’s – finest sandy beaches, including Balka Strand and Dueodde. The area attracts many holidaymakers each year, and Nexø therefore functions as the nearest larger commercial centre, visited daily by both locals and tourists.

The town is characterised by its large harbour, which has historically been the centre of extensive and active fishing, supported by many related industries. The decline in fishing has led to a significant transformation of the harbour area, where many former industrial buildings have now been taken over by restaurants, cafés, craftspeople, shops and service businesses. At the same time, a number of traditional harbour-related businesses remain, and the combination of old and new makes the harbour one of Bornholm’s attractive summer oases.

It was in Nexø that Martin Andersen Nexø spent his childhood, and his childhood home can today be visited as a museum. In addition, Nexø offers many other exciting experiences – see the descriptions of the town’s attractions in the menu.

Nexø is always worth a visit and also functions as a well-established and attractive commercial town.
