Dronningestenen (The Queen’s Rock) is one of the finest viewpoints in Almindingen and a rewarding destination for a walk through the forest. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views across Ekkodalen (Echo Valley), the wooded hills and large parts of southern Bornholm. On a clear day, the panorama stretches across forests and farmland and ranks among the island’s finest.
The most scenic route to Dronningestenen follows Klippestien (the Cliff Trail), considered one of Bornholm’s most spectacular hiking trails. The path follows the edge of the dramatic rift valley, winds through ancient woodland and passes steep rocky outcrops where Bornholm’s unique geology is on full display. The hike itself is every bit as rewarding as the viewpoint.
The name Dronningestenen refers to a large glacial boulder on the plateau above Ekkodalen. Over the years there has been some confusion about which of the area’s large boulders is the “real” Dronningestenen, but the viewpoint has remained one of the most popular destinations for hikers in Almindingen.
The walk does require a reasonable level of fitness. Parts of the trail are steep and uneven, with exposed roots, rocks and natural terrain, making it unsuitable for pushchairs and visitors with limited mobility. In return, you’ll experience Bornholm at its most impressive. Here you’ll hear birdsong from the forest and, from time to time, someone calling “Hvad drikker Møller?” across Ekkodalen to hear the valley’s famous echo answer.
