Folkemødet
Folkemødet

– Denmark’s festival of democracy

Each year in week 24, Allinge on Bornholm is transformed into a vibrant meeting place for politicians, organisations, businesses and thousands of visitors from across the country. Here, citizens and decision-makers gather in the beautiful Bornholm surroundings to talk, listen to one another and strengthen Danish democracy.

Folkemødet can best be compared to Almedalsveckan in Sweden – an annual political gathering where debate, dialogue and participation take centre stage.

Folkemødet is a festival of democracy where everyone can take part free of charge. Streets, squares and the harbour area are filled with debates, talks, workshops, cultural events and concerts. Here you can meet ministers, opinion leaders, artists and ordinary citizens at eye level – and take part in discussions about the major issues of society, climate, culture and community.

The event is created through collaboration between political parties, associations, businesses, cultural institutions and volunteers. Together, they help create a unique space for conversation, participation and inspiration.

Folkemødet is both a physical setting and a democratic ambition – a symbol of openness and community in practice. It is here that Denmark comes together to exchange ideas and find solutions to shared challenges.

Practical information:

  • Folkemødet takes place every year in week 24 in Allinge on Bornholm.
  • Participation is free and everyone is welcome.
  • During Folkemødet there is a wide range of food stalls, restaurants and cafés – from street food to Bornholm specialities.
