Nexø Lystskov and Ferskesø

Nexø Lystskov and Ferskesø
Nexø Lystskov and Ferskesø form a lush and diverse natural area with woodland, meadows, wetlands, and a shallow lake located just south of the town of Nexø. The area is known for its rich biodiversity and is a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking tranquillity, nature, and unique outdoor experiences.
Nature and landscape
Nexø Lystskov is characterised by deciduous forest with a wide variety of tree species, both native and introduced. The forest was first planted in the late 19th century on land that had previously been open, wet meadows and marshland. Today, several meadows remain and are grazed to preserve the rich flora and prevent overgrowth.
Ferskesø is a shallow lake surrounded by reed beds and wetlands that attract a rich birdlife throughout the year. A long boardwalk leads through the reed marsh, allowing visitors to get close to nature. Common reed, tall sedges, reed grass and yellow iris are typical plants in the area. Along the lake’s edge stand unusually large alder trees and other beautiful species, including impressive specimens of oak, field maple, and rowan.
In the western part of the woodland, an Arboretum was planted in 1996 – a collection of tree species that arrived on Bornholm after the last Ice Age. North of the Arboretum, an area has been designated as “natural forest”, where the woodland is allowed to develop freely.
Activities and experiences
- Walk along the boardwalk through the reed marsh and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
- Birdwatching – Ferskesø and the surrounding wetlands are a favourite spot for many bird species, offering rich birdlife all year round.
