Safirsøen lies peacefully in the woodland near Sorthat and is one of several lakes on Bornholm that formed in former extraction pits. Today, the old clay pit is a green and tranquil lake surrounded by trees.
A path runs all the way around Safirsøen, making it a pleasant short walk. The trail follows the lake closely through the woods, and the sea is so near that you can clearly hear the waves in the area when there is a little wind and swell.
From 1968, clay was extracted here for Hasle Klinker- og Chamottestensfabrik. However, the clay did not have the quality the factory required, and extraction was abandoned in 1975. The pit then filled with water and became the Safirsøen you see today.
The lake is also a popular spot for angling. Pike, perch and carp are among the fish found here. Fishing with rod and line is permitted under the rules of Bornholm Regional Municipality.
Amphibians can also be found around the lake, including the Bornholm population of marsh frogs.
Together with Rubinsøen, Smaragdsøen and Pyritsøen, Safirsøen also tells the story of an area where former mineral extraction has gradually created new lakes and natural habitats.
