Sorthat-Muleby

Sorthat-Muleby is a small settlement located approximately 5 km north of Rønne on the west coast of Bornholm.

The area is set in a scenic landscape that today attracts many nature lovers and people engaging in outdoor exercise. At the same time, Sorthat-Muleby clearly bears traces of its industrial past. The Hasle Clinker and Chamotte Brickworks was formerly located here, making use of local clay deposits to produce high-quality clinker and chamotte bricks.

The factory dates back to the mid-19th century and for long periods was one of Bornholm’s largest employers. Production ceased in 1998 after more than 150 years of industrial activity, marking the end of an important chapter in the area’s history.

In the landscape surrounding Sorthat-Muleby, several lakes and wetland areas have formed in former clay pits. Today, these areas are an integral part of the natural environment and contribute to the area’s distinctive character, supporting a rich variety of plant and animal life.

Sorthat-Muleby thus offers both attractive natural surroundings and significant cultural-historical traces, and today appears as an area where Bornholm’s industrial heritage and landscape blend naturally together.
