Stenbrudssøen was formed in a former quarry and bears witness to the extensive stone extraction that once took place in the area. In 1754, King Frederick V established Frederiks Quarry, which became Bornholm’s first major quarry, with a focus on the extraction of sandstone. The distinctive reddish-brown sandstone was used throughout much of the country and was employed for millstones, gravestones, staircases, columns and architectural details in buildings. A well-known example is the Freedom Monument (Frihedsstøtten) in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, which is made from this sandstone.
Along the coastal path just north of the quarry lake, visitors encounter a pronounced change in elevation, where the terrain suddenly becomes steep and difficult to traverse. This striking transition is caused by a geological fault between Svaneke granite and Nexø sandstone.
