Rock carvings - Madsebakke
Madsebakke is located north of Allinge on northern Bornholm — this is the site of the largest rock carving field in the Nordic region, featuring an extensive collection of Bronze Age rock carvings. The site consists of rock surfaces with carvings dating from the Bronze Age, estimated to be up to around 3,000 years old.
On the rocks, several of the original symbols and figures can still be seen — including ships, sun crosses, footprints and a large number of cup marks. Although the carvings are now preserved and protected, they can be difficult to spot with the naked eye, especially for visitors unfamiliar with the motifs.
Access to the area is via paths and signage from the Allinge area (including via Stadionvej), and parking is available nearby before walking up to the rock surfaces.
Madsebakke represents a piece of living prehistory — a place where you can quite literally stand on the rock and feel connected to the people of the Bronze Age. For visitors, the site offers an experience where nature, geology and cultural heritage come together in one setting.
