Lange Skanse is a unique natural area on Bornholm’s south coast, beautifully situated between Nexø and the popular Balka Beach. Stretching an impressive 600 meters, Lange Skanse is the island’s longest coastal rampart, formed of sandstone and covered in turf. The rampart runs along Balka Lyng, Denmark’s only sandstone heath, and is surrounded by a diverse and protected landscape that also includes Nexø Lystskov and Nexø Sydstrand. Here, you can experience the special geology, where the subsurface differs from the rest of Bornholm with its sandstone instead of granite and gneiss. Along the path by the rampart, you can also discover mysterious crater barrows—small stone mounds with depressions dating back to the Iron Age.

The area is a beloved destination for both locals and tourists, who enjoy hiking or cycling between the family-friendly Balka Beach and the town of Nexø. Balka Beach offers fine, white sand and shallow water, perfect for families, while Nexø provides cozy shops, restaurants, and a lively harbor environment.

Lange Skanse and Balka Lyng are thus the ideal spot for nature lovers and history enthusiasts looking to combine outdoor activities, culture, and relaxation in Bornholm’s beautiful coastal nature.
