Bornholm’s Medieval Centre

In Østerlars, close to Gudhjem, you will find Bornholm Medieval Centre – a large and carefully created historical experience where children and adults can get close to life in the Middle Ages.

The centre features thatched houses, workshops, a smithy, a watermill, farm animals and small farms. Its most striking area is the fortified Manor House, surrounded by a tall wooden palisade with a gate tower. Here, visitors can explore the great hall and the surrounding buildings and gain a vivid impression of everyday life, craftsmanship and society in the 14th century.

During the high season, the area is especially lively, with people in medieval dress sharing stories, demonstrating traditional crafts and inviting children and adults to take part in activities such as games and archery. Children can explore the buildings, meet the animals and join in the activities themselves.

The many details and opportunities to touch, try and explore make Bornholm Medieval Centre an ideal destination for families and an exciting experience for children of all ages.

Every year in week 29, the centre hosts its large medieval gathering, when more than 200 medieval participants fill the grounds with camps, crafts, market stalls and activities. Some of the photographs on this page were taken during the medieval gathering, so the experiences available may vary depending on the time of your visit.
