Medieval Bornholm

Bornholm holds some of Denmark’s most significant traces from the Middle Ages. From the island’s round churches and the impressive castle ruin of Hammershus to churches, sites and locations shaped by trade, power struggles and ecclesiastical influence.

In Denmark, the Middle Ages refers to the period from around the year 1000, when the country had become a Christian kingdom, until 1536, when the Reformation broke with the Catholic Church. Many of Bornholm’s most important historic landmarks date from this period.
