Nexø Gamle Røgeri stands right beside the Baltic Sea in the northern part of Nexø, where the smokehouse chimneys, the large terrace and the sea view create the setting for the experience. The historic smokehouse continues Bornholm’s tradition of enhancing fish through smoke and heat, and throughout the season a wide selection of fish and other specialities is smoked over alder wood every day. When the ovens are opened and the freshly smoked products are brought out, the aroma spreads around the smokehouse and its large seaside terrace.
The menu brings together classic Bornholm herring dishes and a broad selection of fish from the smokehouse. It includes smoked herring, hot-smoked mackerel and salmon, fish cakes, salt-fried herring, gravlax and smoked prawns. Røgmesterens luksustallerken combines several of the house specialities, while Nexø Special pairs smoked herring and a cod fish cake with traditional accompaniments. Children’s dishes and a small selection of non-fish options are also available.
Meals can be enjoyed on the large outdoor terrace with uninterrupted views of the Baltic Sea. The atmosphere is relaxed, and children can use the playground close to the serving area. On cooler or windier days, guests can sit in the glass pavilion and still enjoy the sea view.
The smokehouse shop sells the day’s smoked products, homemade fish cakes and other delicacies to take home. The selection is complemented by Bornholm products such as mustard, marinated herring, oils, beer and fruit juice. The combination of daily smokehouse craftsmanship, an extensive choice of fish and the open coastal setting makes Nexø Gamle Røgeri both a place to eat and an atmospheric introduction to a central part of Bornholm’s food culture.
