Helligdommen

Helligdommen is a natural area on the north coast of Bornholm, located close to Døndalen. The area includes the popular attractions Helligdomsklipperne and Bornholm’s Art Museum.

The coastline at Helligdomsklipperne is regarded as one of Bornholm’s most dramatic natural experiences and has no equal elsewhere in Denmark. Here, steep cliff faces rise directly from the sea, and along the coast there are caves and rock formations that bear witness to the sea’s constant influence over thousands of years.

The name Helligdommen originates from a holy spring that once emerged at the foot of the cliffs. In the Middle Ages, the spring was believed to have healing properties and made the site a place of pilgrimage. Nearby stood the Chapel of the Holy Trinity (Trefoldighedskapellet), which served as a setting for religious practices.

Today, a large part of the area is protected in consideration of both natural and cultural heritage. For safety and conservation reasons, climbing on the cliffs is not permitted, but the area can be experienced via marked paths and viewpoints.
