Nørremark

Nørremark covers the stretch between Årsdale and Nexø and resembles a Swedish archipelago with low cliffs, skerries, coves, headlands and underwater reefs. The entire area is protected and contains both unspoilt nature and important historical monuments for Bornholm.

The landscape is captivating, with rich vegetation, and is well suited to scenic walks along the coastal path between Nexø and Årsdale. Along the route are several old defensive structures that were once armed with cannons.

The most well-known is Malkværn Skanse, which takes its name from the skerry located offshore from the fortification and which produces a sound resembling a grinding millstone. It was at Malkværn Skanse that Swedish forces landed on 9 June 1645 and plundered Nexø. Three memorial stones have been erected in honour of the battle, as well as Albret Wolfsen and his comrades, who fell while attempting to repel the landing.

In addition to Malkværn Skanse, Gulhals Battery (also known as Gavlhalds Battery) lies at the northern end of the area, while at the southern end – just before Nexø – are Jomfruens Battery and Lerskreds Battery.

The area holds great natural and cultural-historical value for Bornholm.
